It is official! The portuguese flag will fly above Oshawa City Hall from May 13 to June 10, 2013 to celebrate two important events for all Luso-Canadians – the 60th Anniversary of Portuguese Immigration to Canada and Dia de Camões which many of us recognize as Portugal Day. The request which was put forth by the Northern Portugal Cultural Centre and the Oshawa Portuguese Club was approved by Oshawa City Council at Monday’s council meeting.
A big portuguese obrigado goes out to Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri who has been working closely with us on this initiative since day one. His guidance, encouragement and hard work has made our dream a reality.
On May 13th the Portuguese community of Oshawa will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Portuguese Immigration to Canada and we are cordially inviting you to attend our Anniversary Celebrations.
Our celebration will begin at Oshawa City Hall with the official flag raising ceremony at 4pm. This will be followed by a reception at the NPCC beginning at 5pm with dinner being served at 6pm. Entertainment for the evening hasn’t been finalized but our tentative schedule consists of performances by Francisco Branco, Sabrina Mendoca, Rancho Infantil do Minho (Oshawa) and the Oshawa Portuguese Club Superstars. This is a free event (cash bar).
We are still compiling stories for a booklet which will be handed out to our guests on May 13th and would love everyone’s participation. If you would like to contribute your (or your family’s) immigration story, please email it and a photo or two asap. We’re looking for different views from all Luso-Canadians in Durham Region, regardless of when you arrived.
We are also looking for youth to sing the national anthems during the ceremony. Contact us if you (or your child) is interested.
Please RSVP (yes or no) by Sunday May 5th. We look very much forward to your response.
